This is a letter i typed to a close friend and i think it reflects my feelings only too well.
"So i reached this country , Kuwait. The desert that is pretending to be an oasis , i suppose. I am here after a gap of 8 long years , but i still remember a few bits. I felt a vague familiarity when we drove along some roads. On the way to Farwaniya , which is where my dad stays , i saw lots of huge palatial villas in which the kuwaitis stay and for some reason i felt a vague hostility.
I reached here at about 8 pm kuwait time , that must be 10:30 pm in india and even when i met dad at the arrivals lounge , my blood had not stopped boiling. The reason for this was two young looking kuwaitees , wearing cheap clothes and even cheaper huge jazzy sunglasses smoking a cigarette. They were travelling along with us , from sharjah. In the aircraft , they sat a few rows ahead of us , and i noticed them instantly because of their imperious manner and cheap loud voices.
After we arrived at the airport , we piled into the bus that would take us to the arrivals lounge. When we entered the bus , only the last row was empty except for the above mentioned loud-mouthed , uncivilised animals. My mom sat near to them , and me next to my mom. The two started getting fidgety and started screaming in arabic , crinkling their faces and acting as if we were worms sittting adjacent to them. My mom asked me if we should get up from our places , the suggestion that i immediately refused to abide to , for we had paid as much money as them for this flight. I fixed my eyes on them and i think all my loathing reflected in it.
An old lady , probably visiting her son in kuwait , entered , and sat near us , next to one of the guys. The guy instantly started yelling in arabic and pinching his nose and crinkling his face at her , to indicate that she was a smelly worm , not worthy to sit beside his highness. They proceeded to make a few very insulting gestures and started speaking in rapid arabic pointing and laughing. A few portly old looking arabs looked sympathitically at me , when he saw that insulted , humiliated and angry fire in my eyes.
The two made a few more loud comments in arabic and stood up from their places shifting to another location , all the while screaming at us . The old lady looked flustered and glanced warily at my mother and me. Frankly , i wished to take the next flight out of the country.
Uneducated , uncivilised , loud-mouthed bastards. Of course , they're all fair skinned and bright eyed , but no better than frogs in a well. Having seen no world outside the arabian gulf , they imagine themselves in a much exalted position , failing to see their true selves. They think themselves to be all high and mighty , insulting visitors to their own country, thus tainting the image of every kuwaitee in my eyes. They have infact , insulted their own nation and blacked its image.
I pity them and their world , and stare in shock and disbelief at their tiny little minds. I bet they do not know to speak a word in english , leave alone reading the books that teach virtues of humanity. Education apart , these boys do not even have the basic human value to respect somebody thrice their age ...isnt that something which is a matter of culture and not of education ?
Moreover , why didnt the other arabs in the bus not react , other than sympathetically looking at us in a kindly manner ? Why didnt they utter a single word and allow us to be insulted by these two wily things ?
These crude , ignorant and unbelievably foolish and culture-less boys was my first taste of this country.
I saw them smirking at me at the baggage counter , smoking , in public , under the very sign that warns people of smoking and fire hazard involved with it in an air-conditioned space like an airport.
I am very sorry that i am on the same earth as this scum , and i am sorry for the country of kuwait if this is the quality of its future citizens. I sincerely hope that they make a trip to india and witness for themselves the amount of respect and culture in our nation. Though i doubt if it will rub off on them...they are too coarse for anything as subtle as culture.
You two , fair faced , coarse arabs , i hope your car has an accident , you dont deserve to be citizens of the world. "
I suppose all my bittterness is reflected in that letter. And all you young people reading this , dont ever think of going to some arab country for work , you may get money , but i sincerely doubt the safety of your dignity and self respect.
No amount of money can substitute for that.

I really feel bad that you had to go through such an ugly situation. I have heard quite a bit about the snobbish behaviour of the kuwaiti arabs, but didnt know it was to this extent. I live in Oman and am happy that the Omanis are really warm and friendly people. I find them courteous and very respectful at all times, especially to women.
Humiliating is just the word for your terrible experience. At least you could have shouted at them in English or even asked the other Arabs around - or just spat on the ground at their feet - I don't know. I feel the same anger you felt. My brother-in-law who was in Kuwait for more than 3 decades once told me that Indians are considered third-rate citizens by the rich Kuwaitis. This is the problem faced by migrants all over the world, at least most of them. I hope young readers would heed your advice.
Yeah, racism is rampant in most parts of the world. I know it's horrid and what you faced is stupid. However, I disagree with your outlook of Indians being all nice and polite. I don't know if you can call it racism but most Indians are obsessed with skin tone and fairness. I was personally a victim of the unfairness of this attitude when the first question I got asked for an interview for a part time job is "Are you fair?"
It didn't matter that the other girls that got the job couldn't speak one full sentence without sounding like country bumpkins. Because they were all fair.
A beautiful read! really... though ur last entry had tremendous substance to it, it didn't sting. This one blew me away!! phew..
@ Sujata
I am glad that people in Oman are corteous . I blogged about this is total anger. But now in retrospect , perhaps it is not really fair if i brand an entire country with a wrong stamp.
That said , kuwaitis are snobbish and yes , people i met here agreed that indians are given a low place.
@ Mr B
I am so glad that you understand it well. However , there is no democracy in this country. This land belongs to kuwaitis and they have a seperate set of law and order for them and different for indians. They decide everything.
Why! When i suggested even the idea of a complaint , i was presented with a dismal prospect of eating Khuboos in kuwaiti jail.
@ Bloggermouth
Yes , you are correct about the prejudices and discrimination in india as well..
BUt we do have democracy , dont we ? And complaints are mostly taken seriously..
People are given a chance at justice , and if somebody abuses u , you can shout back and scream at them.
@ Individual
Thank you . as much as i am charmed and encouraged by your kind words , i would love it if you would voice your opinion too..
You live in Uk , if i am not mistaken , correct?
Have you had to face any such thing there?
It is not racism-it is just class difference. The Indian/Asian is the migrant labourer as far as those common Arabs are concerned. Just think what we do on buses. Even if a labourer has come out in his best dress, we- the better off Indians try to keep as much space as we can between them and us. If you would have behaved differently then, you may have a reason to be angry.
Why should we be bothered by remarks from people who don't know us
@ The holy Lama
Err...well ,i have never behaved offensively to any labourer or person from a lower strata of society. They are human beings , after all. Its the same blood that runs in us.
"Keeping a distance" is one thing , but screaming , shouting , showing actions and literally making the other feel insulted is racism , if you ask me..
Unfortunately i do not posess the calm that you seem to have , to take insult and humiliation as " remarks from people who dont know us "
I wonder if you would take kindly to somebody on the bus calling you " an indian dog " and sniggering at you while the whole bus looks on ?
The UN definition of racial discrimination -
"the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life"
Honestly I have not come across such an indignant piece of feelings and outrage at that.
But such beasts are not confined to Kuwait or the Arab lands. There are many of such in this country too.
To point my experience- a few years ago I was at the Rajghat in Delhi, and that was my first visit to that haloed piece of land .I was standing by the inner monument with all reverence such a solemn place would ask. There were these few people from Andhra , men and women noisy and clicking away photographs sitting on the monument by the eternal flame and leaning on and so on. That was to me outrageous and arrogance at its peak .Seeing them in their clownish act a couple of Westerners too joined the impudent melee.. I raised my voice and asked them if they would dance on their fathers’ grave.
That shocked them from their impudence. And surprisingly after a while they apologized.( The difference is that your Kuwaitis did not ) I told them to feel for the man who was rested there.
What I want to emphsise is rascals, rogues and scoundrels can be found everywhere and
the world has no boundaries that can confine them
.. coarse bastards they were.. callous bastards they are and insensitive bastards they will be.. i so totally agree with u. having our differences is one thing whereas obscene discriminatory humiliation quite another! it s the easiest thing in the world to tell u how u "should have" behaved/retorted... i would have been outraged as much, if not more. So far I haven't had to experience anything so extreme. But there was this one particular incident. a group of 3 young drunks (all whites; 2 women and a guy) came upto me while i was waiting for a bus and started calling me four-lettered-words and names. oh! and they got enquired abt my mother and sister. i was rather amused and stood my ground. didn't say a word. but i firmly maintained eye contact throughout. a bus came and i thought i had had the last laugh. They also got into the bus and they kept talking at me. ten minute and 4 stops later i got off the bus and they waved good-byes. i followed suit and went my way. but honestly i didn't take them seriously. except for a couple of chinese looking asians and an old lady, nobody was there in the bus. Once or twice the driver did ask them to shut up. there wasn't a serious air abt the episode at all. also they were drunk. very much so.
@ Anil sir
I understand that. But when you are insulted or humiliated , it takes time for you to think rationally.
I wrote this post in a rage , which is why it is so fiery.
Like you said , racism is everywhere . But as long as you have the freedom to refute it , to protest...it doesnt hurt as much.
But when you're forced to keep silent and bear it , it hurts.
That freedom can be got only in a democracy.
Kuwait , i am sure , has many worthy and dignified citizens.
However , most of the indians here , and proffesionals at that - doctors , engineers , agree that they are treated as second class citizens and not on an equal footing as one might expect from a country which is a melting pot of many cultures and whose economy is supported to a huge extent by the expats living here.
@ Individual
However ,i suppose you are free to complain and can hope to recieve justice ?
@ gymnast: yeahh sure!! in fact i was always aware that there were cctv cameras inside the bus though invisible. every bus has a few cctv cameras and u never know when how or what s being watched..
and yeah complaints of racist basis can create a furore in places like the uk, us and down under. so much so that they bourgeon into a diplomatic issue
to say that these two cretins were disgusting would be an understatement. Unfortunately they're the kinds of people we have to interact with in the middle east. Take a trip to any of the government hospitals or clinics in Kuwait and you'll see a few locals lighting up a cigarette with no worries.
Read this at wrong time...I am headed to Gulf soon
oh that was indeed a horrible experience! But you can find some like this everywhere...you cannot say India is free of such people, but yeah,i guess we are more tolerant. I agree, the other arabs should've reacted. In India, a reaction is ensured I guess..
that is discrimination at its worst and in any form its not pardonable
@ Mathai
Thats sad .. but apart from this isolated incident , i didnt experience anything untoward.
Oh..and i hear that you're a very famous indian in kuwait , ok , atleast in blogosphere?
@ Pesto
Not to worry pesto , i hear muscat is not so bad.
@ Damsel
Now that i think of it , i see even some indian students tease Nigerian students calling them "blackie" and such things.
But of course , here in India , we have good equal justice. Unlike these arab nations.
@ Ani
Just let those two come to India , we'll mash them totally , wont we ?
The cultural flaw you experienced is not unique to Arabs or Kuwaitis in particular. It is there right under your nose in your own neighborhood .Inferior species are there in all human races. But in your own country you don't have to bear it silently. You can shout back and let out your frustration. And that makes all the difference. That is why most self respecting Indians enentually do return to their homeland with all its flaws because once you are home you feel safe as in your mothers womb.I have always felt that to be a truly patriotic Indian you should most definitely have to have an outside India experience, for it is human nature to belittle what we have and to seek out greener pastures only to find out it was'nt green afterall.
famous! moi? flattered as I am by your comment I seriously doubt anyone other than my friends and colleagues know about my blog ;)
@ Nikhil
Well said. And why am i not able to access your blog ?
@ Mathai
Everyone knows the President , but not vice versa!!
Mr A.Mathai was cited to be a prominent figure among Bloggers from Kuwait by a competent authority ( read , the lawyer who lives next door to my dad )
There..i now have a celebrity commenting around here !
:-)
Your angst is evident. You wrote it in a fit of rage and hence it is justified. The guys who hurled abuses at you were uncouth and stupid. Migrants all over the world face such issues.
Our favourite holiday destination Goa, is fast becoming infamous for the rising number of assaults against foreign women. That's another story.....
I have heard of Kuwaitis and their arrogance. But Having lived in Bahrain for 6 years, i feel home away from home. Bahraini's are warm, and friendly and they respect coz of our achievements in shaping their country.
But I feel this kindof rowdy behavior amongst young could be seen even amongst us, especially malayalis. I remember there were a bunch of Mallus in my last flight, pissed drunk, loud and irritating. They were singing loudly in the flight and i felt like killing the bastards. They think its really cool to get drunk and disturb other travelers. Mallus can be really rude and annoying sometimes, especially a drunk mallu.
its really a good thing to vent out the anger. TC
Sorry where did my comment go!....Anyways, i feel Kuwaitis are known for their arrogance, but Bahrainis as i know them are really warm and friendly. In fact to be honest, Sadly i find them better cultured and friendly than most Mallus.
I had a bunch of bad Mallu youth ( in late teen perhaps)in my last flight, while traveling to kerala, and they were the most annoying i have met so far in my life. They were drunk, loud and annoying to the word T.
TC. Its nice to vent.It makes wonderful reading.:)
Bastards ...
Omanis are really musch better
